Message from the President

by Terri Campbell

The show was a bit smaller than last year, but there were some gorgeous plants.  My friend Eleanor brought her digital camera and took some photos as we were setting up on Friday.  Not all the plants were there yet, but she has photos of some of them, and lots of photos of club members.

Celine won a good many of the awards.  Her episcia 'Toy Silver', with hundreds of tiny silver leaves, won Best in Show, Best Hybrid and Best Fibrous Gesneriad, New World.   Celine's achimenes won Best Rhizomatous Gesneriad.  Her chrysothemis pulchella (picture at left) won Best Species.  By the way, Celine almost left 'Toy Silver' at home because she thought that it wasn't good enough.  The judges gave it 97 points.

Katherine won the Helen O'Neal Award and trophy, which is for second best in show, for her sinningia hybrid. It's very tall, with lots of shrimp pink flowers, and the leaves are fuzzy like a leucotricha.  This plant was also Best Tuberous Gesneriad. Katherine took the award for Best Collection, with four petrocosmeas.

Harriet won the award for Best Arrangement with a bubble bowl containing streptocarpus flowers.  It was really beautiful.

I won the award for Best Novice and the award for Best Section K (dish garden).  No other novices entered anything this year.

We had an educational exhibit by Harriette, with some color photos and growing information, and we also had Alan and Debra's exhibit board on Sinningias from last year's convention.

At the next meeting, I’d like to discuss whether having a two-club show was a successful experiment.

MEETINGS -- DISPLAY & SALE – FIELD TRIP --  AUG/OCT 2004

by David Waugh, Secretary

During the Show and Sale June 26-7 there were some comments about having a Display and Sale instead of a meeting on one of our upcoming meeting dates.   The following times are available in the Garden Club Room and have been tentatively set aside for such an event:

The Delta club in Sacramento will be having their annual Fall Show and Sale on October 23-24.   The Saturday opening is at 2pm after judging.  If we do not have a Display and sale on October 17 we could have a regular meeting.  The alternate is to not have a meeting on October 17, and do a field trip to Sacramento on October 23rd.

Please give your comments on the above at our July 18th meeting so final decisions can be made on this matter.

Minutes of The American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco

June 20, 2004 Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

Nine members arrived at the County Fair Building only to discover that it was locked up tight and there was no custodian to be found.   It was a cold and windy day and a band was starting to tune up west of the Strybing entrance (displaced by the band shell/garage construction), not conducive to meeting outside in the park.  After waiting a short time for any late arrivals it was decided to meet at the Waugh/Williams residence in San Francisco

The caravan of three cars arrived about 1:30, met around the dining table, and ate bagged lunches while David made coffee and hot water for tea.  Chocolate was also available.

President Terri Campbell called the meeting to order about 2pm.   Members present were Terri Campbell, David Waugh, Celine Chase, Katherine Henwood, Ben Franklin, Harriette Poss, Larry Williams, Bob Hudak and Jon Dixon. Dale Loughins was at the County Fair Building but was going to have to leave early so decided not to attend.

Because of the sudden change in meeting place the rest of the meeting was rather informal.   Katherine Henwood brought up last minute arrangements for the Show and Sale on June 25, 26 27.   It was clarified who would be able to come at what time on Friday for the setup of the tables and arrangements of entries.  Saturday and Sunday members in attendance for monitoring and cashiering were clarified.

The subject of lighting came up and Bob Hudak commented on some new florescent tubes he bought called ‘Tropic Sun’.  He said they provide a tremendous amount of light and his plants are doing very well under them.   However, the tubes are very expensive, and time will tell how long they last before burning out.

The September meeting had previously been cancelled as it was expected that we would go to Sacramento to for the Delta Show and Sale.   That has been changed to October so there will now be a meeting in September and no meeting in October.

As members had brought ‘show and tell’ and raffle table plants we proceeded with the ‘show and tell’.  Rather than a raffle we merely exchanged raffle plants.

The meeting was adjourned about 4pm.
