Message from the President

by Terri Campbell

This month I’m writing from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where I’ve been working this week.  The campus is very attractive, with lots of fuchsias, geraniums, and citrus trees.   I’m sure that gesneriads would grow well here, with the humidity, etc., but I haven’t seen any.

I’m really looking forward to our show and sale.  My sale plants are saleable, I hope, and at least a percentage of my possible show plants should be ready to add something to the show.  Also, I’m looking forward to seeing everyone else’s show plants!

I was intrigued by Alan LaVergne’s message (on the gesneriphiles discussion list) about Debra’s and Alan’s venture into gesneriad outreach in an unusual venue.  Perhaps outreach would be a good discussion topic for our next meeting.  Where could we, or a few of us, go and bring a few gesneriads, some flyers, and maybe a book or a poster or two?  There are innumerable summer events happening.  If you have any ideas, please share them.

Minutes of The American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco

May 23, 2004 Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

President Terri Campbell called the meeting to order at 1:10pm. Members present were Terri

Campbell, David Waugh, Celine Chase, Irene and David Fey, Katherine Henwood, Ben Franklin, Harriette Poss, Paula de Bella, Larry Williams, Dale Loughins, Kevin Daly, Ken and Vera Parker, Jon Dixon.

The President asked if there were any amendments or corrections to the minutes of the April 2004 meeting attached to the May Newsletter.  There were none.

Treasurer’s Report: Our financial condition continues to be good.  We have received the bill for the Auditorium rent for our June Show and Sale with African Violet Society of San Francisco.  The Treasurer asked that the Secretary request half the rent from the African Violet club.   That way we will not have to dig into our reserves prior to receiving income from the June sale.   It was agreed that we would pay the refundable security deposit for the maintenance staff should we not vacate by 4pm on Saturday and Sunday.   If the deposit has to be paid we will ask the African Violet club to pay half.

Business:   The President then turned the meeting over to Katherine Henwood, Chairman of our June Show and Sale.  The African Violet club is arranging for a Saturday buffet luncheon on the Auditorium stage for the Judges, clerks and officers of both clubs.  Our club will pay for six (judges, officers etc) and other members are welcome to enjoy the buffet lunch for $8.00.  Six others indicated they would make use of the buffet lunch.

The Show Schedule and Entry Form were distributed to those present.   The rest of the members will receive theirs by mail.  Copies will also be sent to the two Sacramento African Violet/Gesneriad clubs, the African Violet club in Fresno and the Peninsula Gesneriad Society.  Members were encouraged to submit entries in Division II  Artistic as defined in the Show Schedule.  This includes dish gardens, bubble bowls, creative arrangements etc.  The flyers for our Show and Sale will be mailed to our mailing list and to newspapers on June 9.

There will be two cashier tables manned by both clubs.  Volunteers were requested from our club.  They were: Kevin Daly, Saturday;  Ken and Vera Parker, Saturday and Sunday;  Irene and David Fey, Sunday.

Our sale plants we will continue to use the price tags on long skewers.  We will have extra skewers and stickers for the lower-priced items.  The African Violet club will use a different kind of price tag.  Since both cashier tables will be receiving payment for plants from both clubs, the cashiers will keep the price tags separate so that final reconciliation can be done quickly.

New Business:  We were again invited to participate in the Strybing Summer Garden Fair on August 7. After some discussion is was decided not to participate this year.   The Secretary will advise them accordingly.

We then did ‘Show and Tell’ and the raffle. The meeting adjourned about 3:45pm
