Message from the President

by Terri Campbell

We had a very successful October display and sale.  Thanks to all who were able to participate.  We had a good flow of foot traffic through the day. Many visitors to the sale were interested enough to ask questions.  There were plenty of blooming plants on the display table.  According to our Treasurer, our receipts for the sale totaled $850.00.  Also, we have a new member who I hope to introduce at our November meeting.

Lorah Gross was able to take quite a few photos of our display and sale, people in the club, and the Ikebana show next door.  They are great shots, as usual.  Please take a look at these photos.

I’ve been busy with fall repotting of gesneriads.  Then I have to work on an inventory.  I’ve found plants I didn’t know I had.  This reminded me of something I have thought about for a long time.  Perhaps the club members would like to share wish lists for plants.  This would help us when we’re wondering what to propagate for the raffle table or for our sales.

Display and Sale October 17, 2004

by David Waugh, Secretary

Flyers about our sale were mailed to our mailing list as well as to the major newspapers.   The Chronicle gave us a separate writeup along with a picture (black and white) on the Wednesday before the sale and we were listed in the Saturday ‘Green Stuff’.  We also had an ad in the Gloxinian 4th Quarter 2004, page 42.

Early arrival turned out to be good fortune.  The tables in the Garden Club Room had not been arranged according to the plan we submitted to the Reservations Secretary.   Oscar, the building manager, was getting ready to leave the building for a morning coffee break.   The tables were hastily repositioned with his help, facilitating our preparation of the display area.  We decided to cover all the sales tables this time, and got all the plants organized and priced  for the sale by 10am. After the sales closed at 3pm the covering of all the sales tables made it much easier to break down before 4pm.

In addition to our usual instant coffee and tea, members brought cupcakes, a chocolate cake, doughnuts, a carafe of real coffee and real cream, and other things to nibble on.

We signed up one new member during the sale, Jeff Stiarwalt.  Welcome Jeff.

The treasurer, Irene Fey, reports that our gross from the sale is $690.  We had expenses including room rental that have not been submitted yet, so our net from the sale is not yet known.

Member Barbara Cantora could not be at the sale all day but came to purchase some of our plants.   Also David Palucci, now living in Gallup New Mexico, was in town and came to the sale.

The following helped with the preparation prior to the doors opening at 10 am,  servicing of visitors after that and the breakdown after 3pm:   David Waugh, Alan LaVergne, Harriette Poss, Gene Sussli, Terri Lynn Campbell, Jon Dixon, Irene and David Fey, Lorah Gross,  Katherine Henwood, Dale Laughins.
