October Display and Sale

by David Waugh, Secretary

After checking with the County Fair Building we have reserved the Garden Club Room for a Display and Plant Sale on October 17 from 10am to 3pm. There was no Saturday date available, so we will be having our display and sale while the Ikenobo branch of the Ikebana Society has a bazaar in the Auditorium and  Recreation Room (and they will be renting the kitchen). Their function should bring people to our sale.

We will need to plan to be at the building at 8am (Ikenobo are starting at 7am) so we can price the plants and set up the display before 10am. The parking lot may be a bit full, but we can double park and unload.  At that early hour there should be ample parking on the street and in the park.

So, continue growing, and starting fast growing gesneriads like episcias for our October sale.

A Little Humor

I clipped this cartoon from a magazine years ago and recently found it while cleaning. I thought that you might enjoy it.

No Pictures for August Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

I forgot to check the batteries in my camera and as a result I did not get any pictures at the August meeting.  Too bad as I brought a beautiful columnea, even though the five blooms were at the end of a foot long stem! Everybody giggled at it hanging down off the table.

Minutes of The American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco

August 15, 2004 Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

Vice President Jon Dixon called the meeting to order at 1:15pm in the absence of President Terri Campbell who previously said she would be late.   Members present were David Waugh, Celine Chase, Katherine Henwood, Ben Franklin, Larry Williams, Jon Dixon, Ken and Vera Parker, Bob Hudak, Paula De Bella, Terri Campbell.

The Treasurer called David Waugh and advised she would be unable to attend the meeting.   She advised that she was still awaiting some expense figures to give the final balance on our Show and Sale in late June.

David Waugh advised he talked with Fred Graffelman of the African Violet Society on July 19.  Fred said that his club had counted their yellow/green tags 3 times to compare with their gross take at the sale.  They figure they owe us $195.10.  I advised him that we figured we owed them $441.80.   It was agreed that each club would send checks to each other ($195.10 from AV to AGSSF, and $441.80 from AGSSF to AV) to clear up this matter.

In the absence of the distribution of the August newsletter a copies of the July minutes were passed around.  There were no corrections or changes to the minutes of the July meeting.

Vice President Jon Dixon reaffirmed our next regular meeting will be September 19.

Instead of an October 17 meeting we will have a Display and Sale.  Since the money we earn at our plant sales is our main source of income everyone is encouraged to continue growing plants for this sale. Well groomed plants for the Display section encourage the public to buy our sale plants.

We then did ‘Show and tell’ and the raffle.

During the Show and Tell there was discussion about episcia cuttings by mail from a lady in Texas.   The service was prompt and the cuttings arrived in excellent condition.  The question also came up about finding clear domes to cloister episcia and other cuttings during their initial transplantings.   Many suggested garage sales, and fresh food containers from grocery stores and Costco.

The meeting was adjourned about 3:27pm.
