The Prez Sez...

by Katherine Henwood

Our Show and sale were successful.  We had an outstanding variety of plants and the sale went very well.  People really were keen with their requests for the plants they had seen in the show.  I think that makes it clear to us that all show plants should have representatives in the sale!

We had no arrangements in the show.  I wish that we could do more with the Artistic division.  Maybe one of our programs next year should be a hands-on workshop on building a dish garden or terrarium!  Another thought would be to have a speaker do a workshop on arrangements.  I'm sure we must have some artistic talents floating around.

We will be making our annual field trip to the Delta Show and sale in Sacramento on October 22. More on that later.

Looking forward to seeing you all in September.

Minutes of The American Gesneriad Society of San Francisco

August 21, 2005 Meeting

by David Waugh, Secretary

The meeting was called to order at 1:14pm by President Katherine Henwood.   The following were also present:  Harriette Poss, David Waugh, Gene Sussli, Larry Williams, Celine Chase, Terri Lynn Campbell, Jon Dixon, Kevin Daly.

Minutes:  There were no amendments to the minutes of the July meeting printed in the August Newsletter.

The Treasurer was unable to attend the meeting.  The President reminded everyone to submit any bills owed by the club for the upcoming Show and Sale.

The President read a letter received from M. J. Tyler, the new Chapters and Affiliates Chair of The Gesneriad Society (formerly AGGS).  As the information is of interest to all members a copy of the letter is included at the end of these minutes.

Various members gave their comments on the San Mateo County Fair horticultural exhibit.  Many of our members contributed to the Gesneriad section resulting in 20 more entries this year compared to last year.   There were actually 26 entries from members of our club.   The people in charge of the horticultural exhibit were very happy getting so many extra entries.   It is hoped that next year other classes might be added.  Also, we might prepare an educational table which pays high amounts prizes which could benefit our club.

Last minute details of the Show and Sale on August 27, 28 were discussed.  We need bodies at 5pm, Friday August 26 to help set up and cover the tables, arrange both the show plants and the sale plants, etc.   The computer program will be used to help cut down on having to hand write lists.   The judges breakfast will be at 8am in the hallway or in the Garden Club Room.   The judging will start at 9am with three judges and two clerks, Harriette Poss and Gene Sussli.

Our program was a game conducted by Terri Campbell.   The game was to list what plants you have to give and what plants you want.   After members had made known their give plants and what they wanted exchanges were voiced.   At the end everyone received token prizes of pencils, bottle openers etc.

We then did “Show and Tell” and the raffle.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:43 pm
